Front seat back rebuild

#1 Post by Charles H Jacobus »

Has anyone rebuilt a seat back? Are any pictures of the internals available?

Thanks in advance

Those rhombus shaped pieces of rubber are actually "O" rings easily obtainable from hardware stores and most auto parts stores. They are easy to replace and I am betting most every 356 over 20 years old have a few that need replacing.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Also, do not forget to shorten the two 'rubber bands' that run across the lower end.
You remove the metal clips, cut back about half an inch from each end, drill new pilot holes and then re-install the clips. Now the bands will be taut again.

Are you speaking of the lumbar strips, Geoff?

Indeed. They are made of a firm but flexible rubber and the ends are a bit reinforced. In order to make the new holes, use a drill. You can't effectively push an awl through.
