I believe it is only VW, might have been used on some pre-A's but I don't think so

The VW part number is visible under the rim.. 111.....it is like the one on my '56 Beetle.

the shape of the top of the knob is different. Not sure if the 10mm thread is he same. Later VW's have an 8mm thread.

Beetle, through '65, then methinks they went black.
Didn't the early 356's have a concave depression on the top of the knob?

Yes Norm the early 356 knob had a depression in the top. It was a very early VW knob, not like the later VW knob being asked about. Photo attached.

No, not Porsche.

Porsche did use the VW shift nobs through April 1954. The first cars up through at least April 1953 used the one Alan shows. From at least June 1953 through April 1954 they use one basically the same as Paul's original photo. But it would have had a different VW part number on it, not the 111... part number. It was the exact same knob that was used on the then-production Zwitter and 1954 VWs. The 3x3 VW part numbers, i.e. 111.xxx.xxx were introduced later in 1954.

The switch from VW knobs to Porsche knobs was between coupes 51857 and 51897, so around mid-April 1954. All the knobs before this were Ivory. The knobs after this were either beige or grey.
