Bay Area and West Coast Reccomendations for Interior and Body?

#1 Post by John Avery Howard »

Seeking wisdom for the collective.

My engine and mechanicals were sorted by John in San Mateo. Great guy.

I need to bring back the interior, rechrome or replace and reupholster the interior. Beyond that the original red is faded and worn to the point where “survivor” may not be a fair description. My questions:

1) Is there a reasonable non concours outfit that does body and interior in the SF Bay Area or environs? I have contacted Autos International and Autobahn and they may be the ones. Hate having it too far away to stop by and discuss all the “finds” that are likely.
2) What is the smart thing to do? I suspect doing the interior and letting the survivor look exist not the exterior for a few years will be expensive if I ever decide to paint. Yes? Who are the favorite Bay Area Body shops? I know Cook’s appears gone (and was not universally acclaimed). I’d like a shop that understands these cars. Who would you point me at.

Thank you all for the suggestions and encouragement. I think my dad’s car is going to be on the road soon!

Charles, the SF Bay Area is huge and there are a good shops that do work on 356s, I see you are in Livermore, maybe you should meet Mike Moore who has been there for years and is finishing up his outlaw. Also the monthly 356 Breakfast, 1st Saturday, 8:30am at Jack's located in the backside of the Newpark Mall, Newark, you will find some good references there. Mike and some others from the "East Bay Grease" group attend the gathering at EASY, also the 1st Saturday in Emeryville. Repair Shops in Northern California

Recently I posted a request for contributions to a list of local repair shops. Having the familiarity with 356s and 912 was a priority, many shops claim to Porsche oriented but lack the current knowledge of our vintage cars. Several great shops recently have closed or sold: The Stable is an example, (lost their lease).
I am hoping that this is a continuously growing list with contributions from local members. This list only offers the contact information, no recommendations, criticism, or issues are considered. That is up to the individual to do research.
