It seems I lost like a quart when I changed mine. Also the new oil pump gaskets seem thicker than what mine was so I had to make a new one from paper bag. Doesn't leak even without any sealant

Raise the rear end of the car with a jack and the oil will migrate to the other end of the case...now there will be only minimal oil loss when you remove the cover.

Also bear in mind that anything that increases the thickness of that gasket will allow more oil to bypass the gears and drop the oil pressure accordingly.

You could just spray the drain plug and surrounding area with brake cleaner, drain the oil into a clean pan and re-use it. Discard the last few ounces remaining in the pan as a precaution & top off as needed. Or just drain & discard all the oil, you wouldn't be out that much $.

Wes is correct; to maintain adequate oil pressure be sure to measure the existing paper gasket and replace it with one no thicker.

Make sure the little (suction) return channel around the periphery of the pump face is open and not filled up with some sort of sealant.
