Seat crease

#1 Post by Charles H Jacobus »

Does anyone know how far back from the front of the seat the crease is suppose to be officially?

Just spit-balling but it seems to me the location of the crease should be dictated by the tie down loops on the seat pan.

Thanks, Mike. Didn't know there were tie down loops in the seat pan- but I guess I soon will. :)

i believe the crease moved forward when they went from T1 seats to the later style, after that it stayed right where they put it :). here is a cool shot from the Reutter seat department.

Wow, that's a little more forward than I thought. Have you redone one yourself, Jules?

Perhaps of note is what that "crease" looks like. It does NOT look like what is being produced at the most popular shops today. What is currently being made is a much wider and deeper depression and does not look like the photo shown above.

Regarding the picture of the seatmakers that surfaced a few days ago and shown by Jules, does anyone else think that these may not be 356 seats? Look at the indentation on the back of the tan seat backs on the shelves facing to the left. They just don't look right to me...

Hi Sebastian, that photo is straight out of Frank Jung's "Porsche 356 by Reutter" book (pg 269). I'm certainly no expert on B seats, but I think a lot of people who've looked at a lot of Porsche seats over the years have been looking at reupholstered seats that, as Paul mentions above, have been reupholstered to look nothing like how they did originally from Reutter. Foam filling is not the same as the materials that Reutter used. The leathers are not the same. And the construction - i.e the internal stitching that gives the seat its shape - is not the same.

Sometimes it can be surprising to see something original for the first time. =)

From Charlie's site, a factory photo showing the crease as they originally appeared from one of the accessory catalogs.

Here are three pictures from an Accessories Brochure dated February 1959 although the window crank & door handle in one and the heater knob behind the gearshift in another show that these are T1 cars.

That crease in the seat belt image looks a lot like the new upholstery available today and was actually the photo I was looking for but couldn't find. I don't think the new covers with the integrated crease are as far off from original as others believe, just a little more 'sharp' than original. The restored seats where they're trying to replicate the original crease today just seem a bit too 'soft'. Somewhere between the two effects would be most original in my view.

Hi James,

I hear you on that, but I've seen lot's of original cars and those indents just don't look right. The indents are very pronounced and I just don't remember ever seeing seats like that. Maybe it's just me...

These are great, guys. Thank you. There does seem to be some differences in the way the crease is formed, however.

Hi Chuck,

Here is a pic of an original C seat before cover was removed for repairs. I think in the upholstery world, the crease is referred to as the "listing".
