Panel and door gaps

#1 Post by Jason Buxbaum »

Being somewhat new to 356 ownership ppreviously only 911 and others. It seems restored 356s if not masterfully done have issues with gaps and twisted trunk lids. I just looked at a compelling 60 roadster after more than a month of preview due diligence and the gaps were bad, really bad. Off nearly a quarter to three eighths on the doors and less so in the trunk lid but still off. When do you look at these cars and say its a hinge adjustment issue and thus minor versus a full bare metal strip and correct?

Sad. I'll bet they are still asking a bundle.

You saw it in person? The gaps are not horrible but they are not going to adjust out. Also it looks like the paint on the bumper is rather rough, although that could probably be sanded and buffed. If you are a perfectionist, skip it. If you want a driver and its priced right, it actually looks pretty nice.

The car is a tweener, roadster, very good color and options, matching numbers s90 and priced over 200k. Its very likely it was hit from behind and the front as the trunk is twisted and the nose shows shrinking filler under the paint. It also leaks from every seal in the car. I do drive my cars but having one door flare out of the jamb on one side and crazy wide gaps on the other would.make me wince every time I looked at it.

It might actually be worth a bit over half the asking price, but it sounds like it would not make you happy to own it.
