Can one change dash lights from .6W to the 1.2W bulb safely

#1 Post by Bob Rode »

Can one change dash lights from .6W to the 1.2W bulb without damaging the lense because of too much heat from higher wattage bulb?

I did with no problem but since then, I've switched to the LED's.

+1 on led. They use about 0.2w and are much brighter than 1.2w stock bulbs.

I bought my 64 C coupe in 1976 and immediately realized that the 0.6 W bulbs were worthless, and I switched to 1.2 W.
I used those for decades (with no issues) until the first 6V LED instrument bulbs became available, and I've been using those in both C coupes for many years now.

Any suggestions on type of LED or suppliers?

Jules (two posts above) supplied them at one time. Jules, do you still? I know I got a very nice set from him; I got the "warm" lights so as to mimic the original hue of the regular bulbs.

I believe you can also get them from Klasse 356.

If I remember correctly, the LED lights for the generator and oil pressure are different.

Totally agree with going to LED's. I did have a couple of the bulbs that I left as the original. One the generator. I like the way the incandescent bulb reflects the generators output vs. just being on/off like a LED. Second, I found the blue high beam LED being brighter than I liked when driving at night, so switched back to the original. Those were really just personal preferences, as the LED's are great.

Additionally I replaced my interior lights with LED's. Nice to see the interior at night if you are looking for something, vs. a yellow hue.

With Jules Dielen's LEDs, the one for the generator light functions just like a standard bulb and brightens and dims accordingly.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....
