I am in the midst of making some new air cleaner parts for my 356 T-5 with Solex 40PII carbs. I have a set of Webers for it too. Now, I know they Webers come with small adaptor plates that adapt the different flange bolt pattern. Generally, the air cleaners are completely different. I always thought the bores were the same..
The question is, are both the Webers and the Solexes a 44 MM bore that is spaced on 90mm centers?
I am getting an odd measurement - 89.5 Can anyone verify that it is indeed supposed to be 90mm?
Thanks, Erik

The center to center distance of the barrels is identical. 44mm is too big for most 356s.

CJ: The top of the carbs have 44mm openings My ventures are 32mm which is standard. On the Formcar-Porsche the ventures are 29.5 I am making air cleaners and need to confirm the actual center to center of the bores.
The question is, how far apart are they? I presume the center to center to be 90mm?

Solex and Weber are the same center to center distance between barrels. You have the carbs, measure the distance.Erik Thomas wrote:The question is, are both the Webers and the Solexes a 44 MM bore that is spaced on 90mm centers?
40mm is the size at the throttle, bottom of carb. You will have to measure the openings on the top of the carbs to see if the Solex and the Weber are identical diameter there. The center to center is the same at the top and bottom.
Measuring the center to center should be very easy but a measurement at the bottom of the carb should be more accurate since those openings are machined and therefore less ambiguous than the cast openings at the top.

CJ:
Yes, on my workbench are both Webers and Solex carbs, right next to a pair of Mitutoyo Digimatic callipers.
However, I am in a hotel in Southern China, with only a pair of Sierra Madre velocity stacks, that I am worried are not accurate.

Erik,
Hang on and I'll get the measurement for you.
My car has 44mm Webers plus I can also provide the Solex ctr to ctr dimension.

Re: Solex PII 40 vs. Weber 40 dimension difference?
Erik,
I get 91mm ctr to ctr on the Weber.
I get 35mm between the top castings.
I get 90mm ctr to ctr on the Solex.
I get 40mm between the top castings.
The distance between the top castings is measured across the center of the jets.
I would think the center distances would be the same for either as far as the air cleaners are concerned.
However, the mounting bolt centers are different between the two.

Thanks for the dimension check, that is exactly what I needed.
