Removing the temperature sensor from engine block
I am looking at my faulty temperature sensor in my 356A and scratching my head because I need to replace it with a new working sensor, but I am wondering if I remove it will a tsunami of oil pour out of the threaded slot - and lead to some hoary expletives!
The only item “above” the sensor is the oil filter (it seems), and the engine sump is well below the sensor. Still ..... I thought it best to ask before making quite a mess!
If I have to drain the oil from the engine to change-out the oil temperature sensor, this is getting to be a bigger job than first envisioned! Sort of normal, actually - but I have been here before and some tips would be appreciated.
Much thanks for any advice,
Robert

Jim,
The filter has a stand-pipe, so it's not going to contribute much. But I'd give it overnight before removing it so the cooler can drain back into the sump.

Robert:
I have just been down the oil temperature sender removal/replacement road on my 1963B (T6). Frustrating. Porsche Classics has produced a new part: #616.107.805.01 oil temperature sender for all 356s from 1950-1965. Carried by a few of our vendors. Supposed to be plug-and-play. I bought the sender (pricey at $250) but was never able to install it in my motor - the threads would simply not engage. I did not want to force it and cross thread. Returned it to Sierra Madre Collection for a refund. (Note: I highly commend SM for the way they handled my transaction and subsequent problems.) Not to highjack your posting as to your question, very little oil flows out upon removal of the oil temperature sender. I just stuck a rag below the sender before removal. No problem.

Jim, is your sender in the wedged-shaped part of the case in front of the fan shroud, or is it in the 'stack' of senders aft of the fan shroud?Jim Beam wrote:Robert:

Place a shop rag or tissue under the banjo fitting before removing it; it won't leak very much as the oil line is a 'stand-pipe'.

Rod: My oil temperature sender is located below the oil filter canister aft (toward the rear of the car) of the fan shroud.
