Question for the engine Gurus

#1 Post by DonCichocki »

I'm trying to find the offset between the right bank of cylinders, #1&2, and the left bank, #3&4. I come up with 37mm/38mm. Can anyone verify this dimension? Thanks!
Regards,
Don

For what reason, Don?

I never measured one during my 61 years of "356s"

I have an aluminum block made to check muffler flange alignment that I can measure tomorrow. My memory says 1.5". That is around 38mm.

Thanks Cliff.
Dick, I'm checking some carb linkage geometry.

Don, the best way to equalize the carb linkage on Webers etc is to measure the distance from the fan shroud to the ball on the carb and to also equalize the angles of the down links left to right.

Another way to eliminate most of the offset is relocating the right carb's ball pin on the arm to the front side--
same on Solexes if not existing. (Didn't verify Weber's ball pin locations)

BUT, balancing the carbs @ various RPMs above 2000/2500+, it doesn't really effect over-all throttle openings
a lot as long as the engine has good compression specs.
BTW, Make sure the right carb link rod @ idle RPM clears the Zenith's air filter canister. (@ the top)

Not sure if you're mounting Webers, but Redline has throttle levers specifically for the 616 motor.
Note how one is offset to improve the alignment.

Greg, Don has joined the Delorto cult at the prompting of Jeff(Jim Jones) Leeds a well known malcontent agitator who sleeps with a pair of Dels under his pillow. :P

Jeff loves Delortos so much that I think he is planning to install some on his Cayenne diesel. Is that even possible!? :P

Seriously, I do think they are a good carburetor based on what I hear.

I just installed a pair of the levers that you picture onto Webers and they are not exactly perfect. One lever needs to have a full open limit stop and it does not. I had to reuse the one on the original generic lever and it was spot welded to that lever which required using a chisel to separate. The levers also do not place the ball centerlines at exactly the same distance from the fan shroud. They are close but since they are for the 616 they should be perfect. The other odd thing is that the extra holes for the balls are not useable because the idle stop portion of the lever fouls the down links.

I wondered why the pillow was so lumpy. Thanks for the clue, Cliff. I might just have to get Dellorto Vanity plates now.
