How to jack up rear so axels don’t drop
Somewhere I saw a way to jack up the rear end of my roadster so the axels don’t drop, and trans oil doesn’t travel down the tubes. Any ideas? Thanks

I'm thinking one way would be to strap the tire or brake drum/disc or end of the axle tube to the upper shock mount. Are you changing an axle bearing or ?

That would do it depending upon what Bill is planning on doing.

I jack up the rear end (to jack stands) for access to the trans drain and fill hole; Then jack up 1-axle above level to drain the tube.
Drain the 2nd axle the same way, then add 3.5 liters of oil.

just jack up under the axle's
put a 2x4 under it..
or jack it up and lower it onto the axle's with something to protect the axle.

On VWs we used to have somebody push down/bounce by the rear fender or bumper then take a Lug Bolt and jam the 19mm head under the spring plate.
Then you can jack the car up and the axle stays in normal loaded position.

Sounds a little risky that it could jump out. And the 356 doesn't have a casting to jam the lug nut against.

Use a 2 x 4 in the saddle of the jack and line up the board with the axle

If you jack a particular side up far enough I believe you can make the associated axel tube drain back into the transmission.

The folks at Hi Tec in Marin showed me a trick years ago. Make an Aluminum wedge Out of say 1/2 inch material. It should be about 3” long and taper from say 1/4 “ to 3/4 “ . Place (jam) one under each spring plate before jacking up (just above wheel). Sorry I can’t do a photo- off in Canada skiing.

That is a safe and clever solution to this question.

When I worked at Ludwig's back in the last century, we would stick a largish cold chisel between the spring plate and the housing, similar to the more elegant wedge that Bill talked about above. We did this when an axle boot was to be changed to keep the axle more at its regular position when on the ground to aid installing the boot without binding.

BTW Dana (at Hi Tec) warned me that they often lose the wedges because they simply forget about them. I verified this with several sets and finally solved the problem with a long string attached to the wedge draped over the steering wheel.
