Guys, I will be replacing the aftermarket "Tower Shifter", some call if a "Gmund Shifter", with a stock T1 shifter in my '57 T1 Speedster.
I searched the old postings but I can't find photos of the monkey motion at the rear and the shifter/heater knob set up at the front.
Anybody have photos or can tell me where I can find them?
I found this about a T2 but nothing about a T1.

Nice to hear from you...too rainy last Saturday for EASY.
Anyway, Dennis doesn't have it and the folks I bought it from don't have it either.
I have gathered all the parts and am ready to install.
I'm used to the Monkey Motion in my black A coupe so i think it will be fine.
I can always put it back in...for the race weekend!!

1. This square set screw is supposed to be safety wired. What do you safety wire it to?
2. The parts manual shows a spacer here and they list various thicknesses. Do I need that and how do I determine the correct thickness?

not sure if this is original, or correct, but this is the way I got the car in the early 80's no indication that the trans had ever been out of the car.
I saw the mention of shims, i think in the workshop manual, but my car had none.

This topic has been discussed many times....I am not sure if a consensus was ever fully reached and or if the details were described well. The basic method is to start at the transmission end and make the adjustments so that the full range of motion is: one achievable and two is reasonably centered about an obvious point. Early shift rods had fiduciary marks for making such adjustment but these marks disappeared mid 53. Most people adjust the mechanism to take up any slack and to have symmetry about the motion and the range of the motion. The shift pattern should be reasonable and symmetric when the adjustments are right. Also you should obviously be able to shift into each gear. always start from one end and work you way to the other end. Adding shims of various thickness helps move the shift pattern in one way or the other. There are many adjustments in these systems. After spending some time going through this exercise one or twice you soon become your own expert. (inspect each part for wear and other maladies) The key with many possible adjustments is to start at the far end and make adjustment as you move towards the final actuation. Adjustments made at the beginning tends to get amplified at the end. There are many people who can state the process with more elegance than I.

where / how is the square screw that hold the monkey motion contraption to the transmission shaft is secured with the safety wire ?

I would say the safety wire is not properly installed. The purpose of the wire is to ensure that the bolt does not unscrew, the tension of the wire should be against the direction of unscrewing. I think there was an article in the registry about a year ago on how this is achieved. The article was in Paul Christensen's "Tech-nique" column. Paul is on staff and his contact information is in the front of the magazine. If i can find the article I will post the reference but a quick email might resolve the issue much faster.
