I think it's more of a "lock wire" than an actual safety-wiring job and as such wouldn't necessarily require twisting. The square head lock bolt on later cars has the same lock wire issue. No designated hole to safety wire it to. The way this bolt is lock-wired appears to be OK. It could also be wired around the shaft on the other side if there is room. It wouldn't hurt to twist the wire (left hand over right), but it probably isn't necessary.

(and, yes, I've done my share of mil spec safety wiring in my lifetime.)
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

I have found that even a slight loosening of that screw will have a dramatic effect on your rotational adjustment. Consequently I use Red Loctite to ensure the screw does not back out even a small amount. The safety wire will keep it from coming out, but any looseness will bugger up the adjustment.

X2 Vic. Back in the 80's at the shop I worked at we would loctite them on all VW's and Porsches.
Never recall seeing one come loose. You can crank those in pretty tight.

Got my Monkey Motion and shift rod in the mail today for my 53 from Adam.
It was all missing, had a modified 911 rod since the guy was going to put in a 911 IRS trans (he never finished his dream)

Don't crank the later ones too tight; that's aluminum you're screwing into.

Is there a set relationship between the Peace Pipe "cup" on one end and the fork for the shifter on the other end? Do they point the same exact way?
(Hard to explain!)

Your right Vic. I was thinking about a steel VW coupler.

So Cal lost a Porsche/VW transmission guy a couple weeks ago.

Shan from Rancho Transaxles, 58 years old passed away in his sleep.

So sorry to hear this sad news about Shan. He was truly a knowledge base for early VW and Porsche gearboxes, and a gentleman to deal with. Sincere condolences to Shan's family and to Sam & the Rancho Performance crew.
