Which Throw Out Bearing Should I Use?
I have a '64 C Coupe. But it has a 180mm flywheel. I'm going to replace the clutch disc (part NLA-141-031-G from Stoddard) and pressure plate (part 616-116-012-01) but I'm confused about which Throw Out Bearing that I should use?
It is important to note that the bolts on the Clutch Release Guide Tube have been replaced with countersunk screws. See attached photo.
Reading lots of posts it appears there are three options (Stoddard part numbers):
1. B throw out bearing 741-116-081-00 (because of 180 mm flywheel)
2. C throw out bearing 901-116-081-01 (because of countersunk screws)
3. 912/Early 911 throw out bearing 901-116-081-11 (because of countersunk screws and better bearings)
Which is best for my 180mm flywheel and countersunk screws on the Guide Tube?
Doing my best to KTF,
Carl

Carl,
I have a '65C and have been using the #3 901 bearing with excellent results. More sliding area to stabilize the bearing on the guide tube. John Willhoit recommends this set-up.

You need the B throw out bearing.

Don, thanks for your input. Do you have a 200mm flywheel? My flywheel is 180mm which is a key part of my question.

Re: Which Throw Out Bearing Should I Use?
Vic, with the countersunk Guide Tube screws is the B throw out bearing too short? Or am I overthinking this?
Thanks, Carl

Re: Which Throw Out Bearing Should I Use?
I don't know whether I was dealing with a 180 or 200 mm flywheel. I took photos. And you are going to be subjected to them.
Also:
I was so tired of static friction in the clutch linkage causing intermittant motion in the pedal release action that I went whole hog with replacement of all steel on steel and steel on brass bearing surfaces. The clevis arm on the bell housing cross shaft got an enlarged hole and a custom delrin bushing. The cross shaft in the transmission case got thin custom delrin AF bushings. The burdon tube got a fresh teflon lining. The clutch cable got a thin teflon sleeve. (greased teflon on teflon is very low friction) The pedal cluster got delrin AF bushings and a better trunion with teflon bushings analogus to the 911 pedal cluster trunion. And everything got fresh moly grease. The pedal action is light and smooth.
One of the biggest offenders was probably the old, worn throw out bearing guide tube. The new guide tube has a textured surface that makes a quiet vooping sound but holds grease nicely.

Carl; the countersunk screws have nothing to do with clearance for a standard TO bearing; either B or C.
The B TO bearing is longer than the C.

Re: Which Throw Out Bearing Should I Use?
Carl,
I have a 200mm flywheel. The T/O bearing I'm using is a Sachs with the following # 3151 132 132. I can't make out any #'s on the T/O bearing that was in my car but it was probably replaced at some time. The sliding surface on the Sachs bearing is 27mm. The old bearing was 22mm.
I will defer to Vic as to which bearing to use.
Here's a side view of the 2 T/O bearings:

I have used the 901 bearing for 15 years and I would recommend it, and you save some money also there is a small mod to use it.

Zim's Price on the 356C throw out bearing (901.116.081.01) is $171.00 The 912 bearing (901.116.081.11) with the parts to properly fit it to the 356B/C is $226.00. You are substantially ahead using the "C" bearing. 2019/01/03 zim 800.356.2964

There you go; no need to countersink your guide tube.Al Zim wrote:Zim's Price on the 356C throw out bearing (901.116.081.01) is $171.00 The 912 bearing (901.116.081.11) with the parts to properly fit it to the 356B/C is $226.00. Thank you all for your input and guidance. The photos are all worth more than a 1,000 words. It seems pretty clear that a B Throw Out Bearing is the best straight forward solution for my situation. Although Al Zim's kit is intriguing.

Carl,
You already have the modified guide and the Sachs T/O bearing can be had for a reasonable price:

Your decision.

Other suppliers that have no overhead (i.s. inventory) can offer products at extremely low cost. Usually these are dropped shipped from the wholesaler directly to you.
Should the product be out of stock, you have paid or it and will have to wait for a new shipment to the warehouse. Your bargain seller is unable to offer a next day warranty nor to provide with assistance for instillation. al zim
