We are looking for advice and recommendations for shipping companies and options from members who have shipped their 356(s) from the US to Europe and back to the US. We had an experience a few years ago shipping a car from Europe to the US in that the car arrived safely but took almost 3 months to arrive, clearly not a desirable situation if shipping a car to participate in the 2019 International Meet in Switzerland.

Some items for consideration include:
1) preferred delivery ports in Europe with Switzerland, Germany and Austria being probable destination areas
2) companies and knowledgeable contacts that were easy to work with, providing timely with responses to questions before and during shipment and after arrival at the ports on "both sides of the pond"
3) companies that met the agreed upon delivery schedule
4) comments regarding safety, damage and security concerns
5) ease of picking up the car once delivered at the port
6) costs for shipment

If you have additional suggestions for items that we have not considered to select a shipping company, we welcome your input and guidance.

Thanks to everyone in advance for their assistance.

Happy New Year!

Debbie & Bill Cooper

It's quicker if you book a whole container rather than sharing a container with 2 other cars. So if you can get three people's cars in the same container, it will move faster and go exactly to the port you want. You can also air freight, but it's very pricey, but quick.

Debbie, we have shipped twice to port of Rotterdam, thinking its pretty safe (it is). We are in CA and used a west coast company .. originally alladdin freight , but was purchased by west coast shipping for the second tour. But the main thing is they used Marlog in Rotterdam (actually in Roosendaal) and those folks were very professional. You could contact Marlog and ask who they recommend on the East Coast. You talk to the shipper and work out which boat and what kind of container (single car, two car etc) so you have a pretty good idea of the schedule, but will not get a guarantee. We used them as consolidator (several cars in a container) and that was fine. We got comfortable with Marlog and the second time just parked the car and left the paperwork on the counter for return (I think they were out to lunch). Here is info on Marlog:

One more thing about Marlog: They don't have any gas on site. I needed a little and one of the employees drove me to a local station with an old tin can so I could get some gas.
I don't think we can attend this year's intl meeting, but maybe next one.
have fun,
bill Oldham

Not trying to hijack but related...
I went at Le Mans Classic this summer and was pondering if some west Coast folks would be interested in sharing a container for the 2020 Le Mans ... 3 or 4 cars to spread the cost. Maybe a European tour afterwards too - not organized so officially on your own; so maybe about 3 - 4 weeks 'on the ground' over there. I met Matt Hummel there - his car went RORO - it was cleaned out of everything not nailed down :-( Hence the need for security. If interested please PM me so as not to clutter this thread. Thks Steve

I have used CARS for shipping a 911 from the UK to Austria two years ago and was extremely pleased with their service, and pricing was competitive as well. They are well acquainted with how to handle classic and other high end vehicles. Very professional.

Shipping a 356 from Rotterdam to New York is about 900$.
Is there some requirements in the US to drive there with a
foreign registered car? Insurance of course. How about
emission or is a 356 so old that it don’t matter?
I would like to attend some 356 meetings and PCA Parade.
This is in a very early planning stage but also wondering where
to store my 356 there if needed.
