Question about Aluminum case halves.

#1 Post by Tim Berardelli »

Anyone know for sure if the two main case halves for the three piece cases were cast by out side vendors , like the timing covers, or were they done in house by Porsche?

Thanks,

Did Porsche have a foundry? I can't remember any pictures of smelting in Made by Hand. I would think that Stuttgart had specialist vendors for foundry work. Porsche didn't even make their bodies.

In Italy things were different I think since both Ferrari and Moto Guzzi had foundries back in the day.

I never knew of, or have seen, a foundry on the Porsche manufacturing site. However, much of the machining of the engine cases were done site -- see Made By Hand film.

Porsche did no casting. Of anything. They did do the machining.

Tim, there were a few companies that supplied light alloy castings to Porsche.
Kolbenschmidt did many cylinder heads, some pushrod timing covers and possibly cases too. Honsel did many four-cam engine cases, some cylinder heads and some transmission cases.
There are a few trademarks that I haven't identified, and some castings that don't have any trademarks.

Porsche always assembled vehicles. They did not manufacture components. al zim
