Porsche 356 Exhaust
I am in the process of pinning down the final dimensions for the exhaust I am having made by Turbo Thomas.
I have opted for the stock stainless steel, after considering the sebring and then ruling it out.
I run the car without rear over riders and need to determine the length of the tail pipes which protrude through the body cut outs under the bumper.
Can anyone offer advise on the length that would look correct.
I would like the end pipes to come past the bumper by about 2 inches, ideas appreciated.
I have included a picture of an S Pipe and the length of this from the straight part to the end is approx 9 inches, I will use these 2 points as a reference for length.
Any help greatly appreciated, need to get this length correct.

Re: Porsche 356 Exhaust
Hi Eric,
My car has stainless pipes exiting from the cutouts in the rear valence. They protrude around 2-3 inches from the bumper. See here:
I'll see if I can get a measurement for you tomorrow sometime. I've been wanting to do what you are, which is having custom welded versions made with a larger diameter tip. I will tell you that I don't fancy the longer length at least with the stock s-pipe diameter. Looks a little puny. I'm living with it until I can get an alternative done up.
Couple other reference pics for you:

Sean,
Exactly what I was looking for, many thanks.
I do like the length of the exhaust pipes on yours, the O/D used on the TT pipes is 64mm.
I will use your measurement as a point of reference for the length of the ones I shall get fabricated.

Are they protruding from the bumper? They appear to protrude that much from the body panel, while being shorter than the bumper which will keep them safer.

Martin,
They do protrude slightly below the bumper 2-3 inches.
I know it is a personal taste, I do like the look of the larger diameter pipe coming out a few inches past the bumper.

Jeff,
Your right, it has a certain look that looks well coming through the cut outs.

Re: Porsche 356 Exhaust
Hi Eric
A few years ago we were running with a 'Sports' Box. Don't know why it was called that, as it made less power than the Stock system !
But the point being that it exited from beneath the rear bumper and it was always scraping on the floor on a steep incline. I remember down in Angouleme in France how a marshall was waving us back, to put our car on display (reversing up a sidewalk to face out) the low pipes just smashed straight into the kerb! So this got aimed out! Been running with a Bursch for many years, but this is due for renewal now, so will be interested in how your new system performs.
Happy new Year to all.
Kind regards Jay

Re: Porsche 356 Exhaust
Eric I sent an email with the dimensions but will post them here as well.
My stainless pipes exit about an inch past the bumper trim strip. This helps keep soot off the bumper for sure, but looks a little long from some angles (like in one of my pics above). Again I think the diameter of the pipe will make a big difference (yours being larger is better) The pipe itself is a 90 degree bend and using your dimension measures 7.5" long. Your 9" should put you just over 2 inches from the end of the bumper.
Of course, not all bumpers are mounted the same. My body to bumper gap may be larger or smaller than yours so there's probably some fiddling that will need to be done.
On the note regarding scraping - since these exit through the cutouts rather than under the valence as with a sport exhaust, scraping is highly unlikely.

Norm,
The car on the right has nailed it in my opinion.
Is this your car, if it is can you take a measurement of the length of the tailpipe using the points of reference above.
Many Thanks.

Re: Porsche 356 Exhaust
Hi Jay,
As mentioned earlier, the pipes will continue to go through the body cut outs so shouldn't cause a problem with ground clearance.
Happy New Year to you and yours also.

Re: Porsche 356 Exhaust
I opted for the stock exhaust made by Turbo Thomas and a set of short S pipes with a larger end diameter to use when the rear bumper is off and a longer set to use when the bumper is being used.
I am happy with the exhaust and pipes however I have come up against a problem, the person that makes the exhaust does not supply the brackets for the S pipes.
I have some brackets which I had from a dansk exhaust which I had intended to use but in the end decided to go with a stainless steel one from TT.
The brackets however are slightly too large to clamp the tail pipes. The hanger from the exhaust has 45.5 stamped on it, this is loose on the pipe, however there is a clamp which has 42.5 stamped on it, this fits well.
My question is do these hangers come in the 42.5 diameter or am I going to have to cut the hanger and weld the 42,5 clamp onto it.
I have attached a picture which shows the hangers on the top and the slightly smaller diameter clamp on the bottom.
