Vendor for generator field coils?

#1 Post by Matthew Devereux »

I was wondering if anybody knows of a vendor who sells field coils and perhaps field coil shoe screws. Its a 12 volt 25 amp 90 mm unit. I'll try and get them repaired local but I'm not too hopeful on that front.

Thanks John. I sent them an inquiry. I did pull the coils today (after drilling out the screws) and found a broken lead under the insulation. Its a couple inches after it exits the coil. I don't know whether its good practice or not to solder repair or not but I will look into it.

There are also field coils occasionally offered on eBay as well.

Zims doesn't carry them although their generator rebuilder might sell them....tba. There is nothing on Ebay I can find. I did find a couple of electrical companies that make them...Amsco Valley Forge and Dixie Electric although I haven't contacted them yet.

Thanks Peter but I'm looking for just the coils. Its a 12 volt 912 generator.

Try BNR parts in Van Neys, CA. They rebuild generators for many makes including 356/912 both 90 and 105 mm and sell field coils outright both over the phone and on eBay.
Sorry, I don’t have their number handy.

They have a complete set. Ask if they will sell you just what you require.

I sourced some from Dixie Electric although I had to buy through a local distributor who had no clue what a field coil was. They were pretty cheap. Unfortunately slotted pole screws have to come from China as McMaster Carr won't ship to me :) Hopefully my $130 rebuild works out.

Like most of our vendors Pre Mat ships to Canada and tries to find the least expensive way to do so. But the bureaucratic costs involved in preparing and filing X copies of Y forms means orders under a certain value are not really 'doing business'.
If you have the time, have McMaster send them to a supplier who is sending you other parts and they can put them in the shipment; win-win.

I did put together an order with a few more items. This is what they said " We are a business-to-business supplier of industrial goods. If this material is not for personal use, you may re-place your order with your business or school name." You learn something every day. I could have fibbed but their are other places to shop.

This must be recent.
I bought from them for many years before starting Pre Mat.
It's easy to understand the resistance to the clerical costs of customs on a small order. It's harder to understand someone offering something for sale but only if...
Doesn't help their rep IMO.

Sounds like they were suggesting how to bend the rules a bit.
