Pulley pulling

#1 Post by Graham Kerr »

Further to Paul Christensen's article on extracting the power pulley in the Registry magazine 42-4 Nov/Dec 2018, I was faced with the same problem as I wanted to get this pulley chromed so it had to come off. But, of course first you need to loosen off the 30 mil nut. There was no way of holding the engine internals steady such as a flywheel peg so it came down to having to secure the pulley itself. I had a poke around the old metal bin and came up with this rather unglamorous but very workmanlike bit of kit. The main body was a piece of steel strap 30" x 1" x 1/8th. I cut two pieces of thickwall 3/4" tubing 1 1/4" and welded them onto the strap approx. 2 3/16th centre to centre. The two pieces of tubing go into the holes in the pulley and holds it while you heave on the 30 mil ring spanner. The nut comes undone and I pulled my pulley off with a pair of old tyre levers (remember them?). So the total cost of a tool you can use again and again - peanuts.

Grahm
I Took my 30mm socket with my breaker bar. Socket on the pulley bolt, breaker bar resting snugly on the #2 exhaust pipe. Hit the
starter and you are done.
