Bypass and Pressure Relief Valves

#1 Post by David Nicholls »

Dear Members

I'm totally rebuilding a 1963 Porsche 356 SC engine.
Below are pictures of the Bypass and the Pressure Relief Valves, that were removed from it.

The one on the left is 18mm high. The spring fits in for 15mm and the base is 3mm thick.
The one on the right is 22mm high. The spring fits in for 19mm and the base is 3mm thick.

Could someone please tell me which Valve/Piston goes where ?
Or should they both be short, or both long.
The engine has been previously rebuilt, I don't want to repeat previous mistakes.
All knowledge will be gratefully received.

Regards
David Nicholls

Can't respond to this now until after my angiogram in the next week or two, after which I should now a lot more about bypasses and (heart) valves.

(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

Best of luck on your up-coming maintenance and, if needed, tell the doc, "NO REPRO PARTS!"

The pistons and springs have been superseded so that there is now only one of each. Both pistons are identical. Both springs are identical. I put things back where I found them but also check the manual for spring position if they are different lengths. If the pistons are scored badly or if I had to butcher them to unstick them they get replaced. If the springs are significantly flattened on the outside ot the coils due to movement they get replaced.
