Engine Lid Modified B T6

#1 Post by Ralph Sikes »

Just bought this car and the Engine lid has been cut between the grills. It's done very neatly and has been painted since. is there a reason someone would do this, or just general wackiness?

Wow, no clue. Cut the middle but left the ends to attach the grills. Could a third brake light fit there?

Is it possibly for clearance for a centrally mounted VW air cleaner?

I see where you are going with this, Martin.
Ralph: any other metal cut away on the inside of the deck lid?

No, the rest of the lid is in tact, but there are 6 suspicious holes on the inside of the lid. The cut section is perfectly straight and clean. Who ever did it was careful and neat, looks like it could have been factory. The holes inside are telling - just can figure what it would have been for????

Hope it wasn't for 2-grill badges having long screws to mount them.

Charlie Young modified this Roadster engine lid at Road Atlanta circa 1985

From your photo, it appears your car is an early 1962 model...the lack of louvers denotes that. It would seem some 'creative' previous owner mounted something there, most probably a cooler of some sort. I have an old T-6 lid in my stash of parts, on which, someone cut away most of the interior shelving, where the louvers were, in order to fit the piping of an extra cooler. Seems to have been a popular modification in the late seventies, as I know of other cars similarly butchered. Never saw the exterior skin cut away though.

I have a bunch of deck lids for T-6 cars that I will sell reasonably. Many of them are the C style with full louvers. al zim 800.356.2964 2018/12/12

Good luck with that Al. Probably the hardest thing to sell on a 356. Back in the day I had about 6 of them. After dragging them around for years to Porsche swap meets I gave them away for next to nothing.

We sold a 356 rear deck lid. That’s the third in thirty years. We have about twenty deck lids. No one needs them as they don’t get damaged. If you are hit in the rear, the deck lid pops up undamaged.

I’m looking for a T6 rear lid that I can punch louvers in for an outlaw project I’m working on. Also looking for someone preferably in So Cal that can punch the louvers for me. Chuck

I'm certain the majority of street rod fabrication shops in the SoCal area have louver punches. When I wanted some louvers done the problem I was faced with was that the deck lid is compond curved and of course it has the double skin to it. What we did was to cut out the centre section which we flattened out, punched all the louvers we wanted then tig'd the panel back into the deck lid. It took a bit of work to get straight but it came out all OK.

I'd suggest touching base with Bob Kann of GTWerks.
