Radar detectors used in our 6 volt cars?

#1 Post by Steve Raucher »

Anyone have info on using radar detectors in our 6 volt 356 cars without any damage?
I have used my Garmin Nuvi GPS in my cigarette lighter and it worked..... Think is is a 12v GPS?
Better yet a battery operated radar detector would be great.
Any insight is appreciated.
KTF,
Steve

I am pretty sure Sebastian has used GPS and/or radar detectors without problem in a 6 volt 356. Found it! His comments, and others, are here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40901&p=257941&hilit=gps#p257941

I've found that 12 volt phone chargers and GPS work fine in a 6 volt 356.

A radar detector sound like a great idea but I remember that jammers are illegal over here in the UK.

At 3,000 or so RPM the generator will put out 7.2 Volts which is enough voltage for many - but not all - electronic devices to work. If it doesn't work, there are voltage boosters available to increase the voltage to 12 Volts.

I have been using the Waze traffic app. Even when driving to or from work 10 miles away same route for 15 years. Here's why,
Waze has icon alerts that many people use. Drivers helping drivers.
So many time I'll get "Police reported ahead" then .5 mile .2 mile 500 feet ect. Then you get a thumbs up or not there icon.

Saved my ass a few times.

I installed a 6 to 12 volt converter for the radar detector and phone charger. You need the charger for long trips. The charger was a small electronic board recommended on the Talk Forum about 4 years ago. I use a Valentine1 detector that requires 11 to 16 volts.

usually we do not get tickets in our 356s either the cars are too "cute" or they do not go fast enough

I made a simple 6-to-12 volt converter to charge my iPhone that plugs into the accessory socket using a modern BMW motorcycle plug and a $10 6-to-12 v circuit board I found on eBay. The circuit board seller is in Hong Kong and it arrived in a padded envelope in just a few days.
