T2 coupe restoration

#1 Post by Tim Menefee »

Hi, I'm restoring my 59 T2 coupe. Silver with red interior. I'm on a quest to make the car completely original. I have the matching engine and transmission. Any sources on how to paint certain parts? For example - clutch and break assembly, shifter, swing arms, spring plates etc... What about bolts? Some look black and others clear... Any source for original spring plate bolts? Any source for door bolts? Have 8, need 8 more... Thanks, Tim

The two best sources are "Neil's Book" which shows pictures of just about every finish in a Ruby Red T2 coupe (available at the Registry's Goodie Store for $60) and the Reutter Certificate.

The Reutter Certificate should tell you the finish on everything built by Reutter (won't include the engine). For more information see the threads:
  1. Reutter like Kardex
  2. Reutter certificate
  3. Reutter Certificate of Production
  4. I received my Reutter Certificate of Production today
"Neil's Book" is in limited supply in its second printing. Order soon.

International Merchantile has very authentic bolts in many sizes and lengths
Other vendors may have the bolts too with the correct head size, eg. 14mm wrench size 8mm bolts
You can have your hardware replated - most areas have a company that does that
Tim - If you add your general location into your profile, people close to you can give recommendations.

Are the suspension nuts, bolts and washers black oxide? I do have Neil's book but it doesn't show the suspension bolts.

Hi, does anyone know if all the M8 nuts are 13mm or 14mm?

To see which tire pressure guage and other tools are correct Google 356 Porsche Tools. A very good website.

Also, Having 14mm hex hardware, you should have the correct 10/14mm (or 12/14) wrench;
NOT a 13mm size!

The B/early C tool kit should have the 12/13mm wrench vs the 14mm size until the later C kit
had all 5-wrenches from 8/9, 10/11, 12/13, 14/15, & 17/19 and continued into the 900 series.

Hi, does anyone have or know what the bolts were suppose to be on the fan shroud? Are the fixed fuel lines painted or plated?

The fuel lines were plated, most likely galvanized zinc back in the day, as were the bolts.

restoration design or Trevor's Hammerworks sell excellent reproduction panels, as do some of our other trusted vendors.
