Maybe the spring inside that puts tension on the recliner lock has broken? Check the lever to see if it has tension. Also check to see if all the screws holding the recliner to the seat are tight.

Ahh. The self-reclining seat effect. I have these in my 912. As I understand, there is a part that needs to be modified in the mechanism. Short of tearing the seat apart completely, you can get a fix from Ron at Precision Matters. They are called Seat Popper Stoppers.

Best of luck. It can be really frustrating.

Ron's ad says these are for C cars. They were originally suggested as a substitute for the failed plastic covers/stops on the 1965 C models.

The car in question is a B. Will they still work?

Since the car in question is a 63, I was thinking it would work. I have not heard of that many earlier seats with the issue. But you may be right.

I'd check for broken parts first.

Dave, you are correct. The plastic covers kept the 'finger' engaged in the washer 'groove'. Porsche's design was good for about 40 years, but once the plastic breaks, there is nothing keeping the 'finger' engaged, except for the Popper Stoppers after you install them.
But given that C seats (or mechanisms) have migrated to other year cars, there are cases where they will fit.

No plastic in the pre-C recliners. Ron nailed it. Keep us posted, Joseph.

Where the Popper Stoppers are needed is in recliners where (1) the outer face is smooth -- no pivot point and (2) on the backside of the mechanism with grey or black plastic covers -- late 1964 production on thru early 911/912.

I do not know when the factory introduced the fix which does what the Popper Stoppers do. There is a shop in Santa Barbara which regularly buys them for use on early 9XX cars and he also has no real idea when the fix was introduced. The factory put in a roll-pin which does what the Popper Stopper does; acts as a thrust surface.
Brad, I've sung your praises many times to many people for many reasons, but I have to thank you again here for the very clear statement of the applications. You are one of the 'all signal - no noise' resources available to us who can only aspire to your knowledge.
