Rear license plate mounting options? 356B T5

#1 Post by Jonathan Trichel »

Recently completed restoration of my 61 notchback. A few mild outlaw changes, including removal of the risers and a clean no holes look in rear.

Trying to figure out how I will Mount a license plate. Anyone know of a bumper bracket? I can have something custom fabricated but just wondering if anything already exists?

I believe John Copello has a bumper-mounted front bracket that might work for the rear bumper.

I take it that you don't want to drill yet more holes in the nice new body & I don't know what material your number plates are made from but here in the UK the age relevant type are generally aluminium. I have bent the plate to fit the curve and attached it with a series of small magnets glued around the perimeter of the plate, rare earth magnets REALLY hold on tight, even with a thin buffer on the magnet/car interface. Here we can also get 'plates' made from stick on plastic film, I assume that's not an option for you over there.

Jonathan,
Your car is lovely without holes.
Keep it that way and use double sided peel off adhesive foam. Fix to the rear of the plate first.
Before fixing make sure of the correct position and mark the corner positions (You only get one go ! ) I can't give You dimensions, as Your car is a notch back.
Our plate on the rear of our coupe is aluminum and has been on the car for about 18 years, so I'm sure it won't drop off if you make sure it is clean before fixing. Remember , You only get one go!
Kind regards Jay

John,

I also followed the use of double sided tape.

The plate can be slightly bent prior to application to follow the curve of the car.

I have used Velcro sucessfully, a long strip across the top and bottom of the plate.

My car is a T6 but the principle would be the same. My dad made this years ago. It’s just 2 strips of 3/4”x1/8” steel flat bar with some holes drilled, and a 90° bend and a 90° twist at the end. Sorry for the crap drawing. They are bolted through 2 holes in the bottom of the bumper. I assume they are factory drain holes, but maybe my dad drilled them. I can try to explain it better if you’re interested in trying it. J
