Fram filter bolt

#1 Post by Charles H Jacobus »

When we changed the filter on my car, I noticed the bolt was not correct as it fit loosely in the cap. I order a new bolt and that bolt has finer threads and it too large for the hole in the cap. Is there more that one size bolt and how do I identify it.

Thanks

Chuck

Are you sure that you don't have an H filter canister? Compare here: https://porsche356registry.org/article/230

Wait: you just changed the filter and now the bolt doesn't fit? That shouldn't happen as the bolt goes through the filter hole and back into the threaded tube of the canister.

Original FRAM canister bolt 22mm head and 15mm shoulder Original H filter canister bolt 17mm head with 14mm shoulder. So check your canister type. The fact that someone put a Fram sticker on it doesn't mean it is a Fram canister. Many a H canister has been painted orange with black top because owner wanted a little more color in the engine bay.

There are about SIX different bolts! Don't ask me what goes where.

This one is silver and has a Fram decal on it, but that doesn't mean it is. Engine was rebuilt in 2004 and someone could have changed it, I guess.
The tech that changed the oil and put the filter in wrote the following on the invoice:
356/912 oil strainer gasket set
Oil filter, OX 79D, 912s
He showed me that it was the wrong bolt, so I tried to order one. This year I went to change the oil / filter and noticed the new bolt didn't fit so I re-installed the old bolt.
I will check the car tomorrow and get a picture of the filter, but the head is 17mm and the bolt I bought was a 22mm head. Now I'm thinking it might be H canister with the wrong bolt (doesn't have the correct shoulder).

Thanks for the thoughts.

Compare your canister to those in the article I put in my 1st reply. Determine what you really have and then get the correct sized bolt and copper washer. Correct gasket, copper washer size and bolt and you will be good to go.

I was told there were actually about 11 variations of the bolt. Doug's advice is spot on.

I have sent John a message, called and left a voice message and an email.
Current bolt is:
Current bolt (which is wrong in that it has no shoulder- someone got that at a local hardware store :) ) is:17mm head
30mm long
10mm dia
12mm hole in filter top
email:cjacobus1@gmail.com
Phone: (817) 602-2915

Picture below.

Looks like a Fram to me but it sure doesn't use the Fram bolt I got from Sierra Madre. (Fram Oil Filter Canister Lid Bolt, 10mm x 1.25mm, 356)

Thank you all for your thoughts.
