Apparently there is nefarious trade in VINs taking place. I've been told that theft of 356s is a real big problem in Europe, but the stolen cars cannot get title even in Eastern Europe with their VINs, so some shady characters are buying these wrecks, cutting out the VINS, welding them in place of the stolen cars, and thereby getting titles.
This used to be a common thing with VWs back in the day, so people in the know would open the inspection cover on the pan and stick their finger under the area of the tunnel where the VIN was stamped and feel around for welds. Might be a good idea to feel around or inspect the VIN area in the trunk of any 356 you might buy overseas.

Bingo! The real reason some of these crap cars find buyers. Don't buy all the hype about bringing the horrible hulks back from the dead. There are a few of those but also many crooks taking advantage.

The ad reads: "It is missing the engine and transmission, however it will make a strong platform for a very exciting winter project."

I'm thinking

BHCC is a very interesting place to visit and wander through - several hundred cars in varying states of disrepair. Aside from the hyperbole in their ads, I saw many viable projects when I was there of many European makes (and al lot of horrible cars, too). Their prices are negotiable ...
And guess what - they're not in Beverly Hills!

That yellow one, just on Bring a Trailer, a roll over 64, certainly looked interesting at 17,000 and was a relatively easy repair. No rust repair and a California black plate, but finally selling for 36 was a bit steep
