Re: Billet heads on Samba
Very interesting! I bet they have a performance version....or, have they already improved the ports? The possibilities are intriguing. Pent roof 4-valve? Flatter VW style chamber?
Thanks Phil.
Thanks Phil.

Interesting. I was at the Strahle swap meet last weekend and there was a Swiss shop showing a CNC machined billet head also. Looks to have been a different outfit. He also had some very nice new rockers.

Re: Billet heads on Samba
One rocker could operate 2 valves. It has been done on other engines.Edwin Ek wrote:How would a pushrod 4-valve head work?
I think he has been teasing the product on Facebook. Leo Droughton has some roller rockers. I have been thinking about going to Jesel in NJ to see what rockers they could come up with but I am afraid to ask how much it would cost. If I were the head guys I would redesign the chamber and valve angles and provide the rocker system to work with them. Well, I would if I thought there was a market which there probably isn't.Joris Koning wrote:Interesting. Re: Billet heads on Samba
JPS Aircooled in Geuensee, Switzerland makes a new CNC head and a very interesting piston / cylinder set. I met the owner at Rennsoprt. I think some of his ideas will extend the service life and performance in these good old tubs. Jacques is working with him on 4 cam stuff, and is better informed than I am.

While I love to see new parts and innovations of old designs, this sure makes my already borderline pile of heads that much more worthless. I might have to buy a boat, since it's looking like I have a bunch of anchors...

Not knowing too much about the characteristics of billet.
Would these type of heads be prone to cracking due to heat in a similar way to the original heads.

Since I am always looking to help those in need I would be willing to buy 2 uncracked C or 912 heads at a price that is slightly higher than the zero that you are now expecting.Adam Wright wrote:While I love to see new parts and innovations of old designs, this sure makes my already borderline pile of heads that much more worthless. I wish I had C/SC/912 heads, almost all of these are A or Early B, wanted by no one.C J Murray wrote:Since I am always looking to help those in need I would be willing to buy 2 uncracked C or 912 heads at a price that is slightly higher than the zero that you are now expecting.Adam Wright wrote:While I love to see new parts and innovations of old designs, this sure makes my already borderline pile of heads that much more worthless. Re: Billet heads on Samba
"billet" refers to being made from a solid block of material that is extruded. The makeup of the material should be chosen for the application and if the choice of material is correct and the machining is correct they should be stronger than the original cast heads that by nature would be porous and more crack prone. Cast heads also come in many different alloys depending on what the engineers specified.EricMcKinley wrote:Not knowing too much about the characteristics of billet.

Solution... take a pair to a machine shop with CNC equipment along with a C head. Have them scan the C head and write a program to CNC the heads to C spec. Convert all your early heads into real money.Adam Wright wrote:I wish I had C/SC/912 heads, almost all of these are A or Early B, wanted by no one.

Re: Billet heads on Samba
How about you drive up to NY, load your truck and you can corner the market. I'm better at the finding and selling, not so good at the restoring. If you really want to, I know a guy in VA with another 200 heads, so you could really be the Head King!C J Murray wrote:Solution... take a pair to a machine shop with CNC equipment along with a C head.
