Tachometer clarification for a 1960 Roadster 1600 Normal

#1 Post by Mark Brahms »

Can someone please tell me where the green lines and red line should begin and end on the tach for a 1960 1600 normal engine? I had a book that I can seem to find that identified the information.

Thanks in advance

Hi Mark,
I know the red zone is 4500-5000 RPM and of course the green zone ends at 4500, but I can't recall if the green zone starts at 2500 or 3000 RPM. Being a Normal, I going to guess 2500 (and likely be wrong)...

I have a 1960 1600 Super Roadster and the green zone is 3000-5000 RPM. I don't recall if Porsche dialed it back 500 RPM across the board for the Normals. They did on the upper end.

Harry's post is correct for a normal (A, bt5 and Bt6). the only thing that changed was the green turn signal arrow at the bottom and the green parking light indicator starting with the Bt6. The A and Bt5 had a red turn signal indicator.

Re: Tachometer clarification for a 1961 Roadster S90

I have a ‘61 S90 Roadster, per car and CoA (also fog lights, which are still present). My tach failed. Not original. I need to either have Palo Alto rebuild the tach, or replace it with a period correct tach. My question is - should the ‘61 Roadster S90 tach with a green arrow at the bottom? The ‘61-62 owners manual pictures a tach with that arrow at the bottom. BUT a seller on ebay (ZuffenHaus - Doug Melvin) has a 11/60 stamped tach he says is from a S90, has no turn signal arrow indicator at the bottom. Do both versions occur in a ‘61 S90? If so, where is turn signal indicator w/o that arrow at the bottom?
The tach now installed (and which has failed) is date stamped 10/63. I believe I picked this up at a swap meet years ago because it was a better match than the one installed since the red line starts at 5500 goes to 6000, which would be correct for the S90, but given the date, would be a SC tach.

61 S90 tach would have no green turn signal arrow, green hash marks starting at 3000 and a 5500 redline per Jon Bunin discussion here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=48449&hilit=tachometer+ID&start=15

Mark, what is the date code on the back of the instrument? Is the face original to the instrument?

Apologies, I pasted the wrong photo from my files. While the green lines are the same, this the one I intended to show. It is the original tach in my 60 Roadster 1600. The indicators can be seen on the face.
