How to cross the Channel with your 356...

#1 Post by Pascal A J Maeter »

Good morning,

Beautiful picture of the good old days of travelling between the Continent and Great Britain, driving your newly acquired 356 on special custom plates onto a Bristol 170 Freighter plane.

Actually when flying over the 30 miles of the English Channel in a Bristol Freighter one was always expecting something aquatic. They probably flew at about 500 ft as by the time they climbed that high at the speed and climb rate they could manage it was time to come down to land.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

A bit of a November 11th story, I watched it yesterday.. was moving for sure.
slightly different.. but a Great UK story of two Lancaster Bombers, together for the first and likely the last time.
Lots of film over the cliffs of GB.

Thanks for that video Jim. Somehow I managed to miss that documentary but I am betting I can find a recording somewhere. I was also very fortunate to get up close and personal with both Lancs but fully 50 years apart. The RAF one when I was still in the RAF in the 70's then in 2007 I was crewing on a Sherman tank at the gathering of Mustangs when the Canadian Lanc flew in and as I had a pass I was able to get on board. The video made the hairs on my neck stand up but any time I hear a Merlin be it RR or Packard that is going to happen. The 17 liter V8 in the Sherman had the same effect.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Wikipedia had to move the List of accidents and incidents involving the Bristol Freighter to a page separate from the Bristol Freighter page. That isn't a good sign considering Bristol only built 214 of them.
