rear damper mounting
i'm nearly there restoring the bodywork on my T5, but am just wondering if the rear damper mounts (the cantilevered plates) are prone to failure? i guess they are subject to a lot of cyclical stresses....anyone else welded bracing to that area?

Re: rear damper mounting
Do you mean the plates that the rear rubber jounce bumpers hit on really big bumps? As long as they are not bent or rusted out, like most of the car they were designed properly.

That part also should be fine if it is not currently damaged in any way.

Re: rear damper mounting
That part extends into the chassis about 1.5", if I remember correctly.
I have seen THREE failures, all due to rust, and all on 1958 models. Examining one up close and out of the car taught me about the construction. I would not worry about it one bit; unless you have a 1958 in Michigan.
