Ech lost luggage found on the pkwy

#1 Post by Ned Gorski »

About an hour after leaving ocean City, my girlfriend (Erin) and I are driving down the garden State Pkwy with blue in tow.. Traffic is moving at a good clip but we can see cars going wide avoiding something right on the white line on the right shoulder. As we pass it we can clearly see it's a brown suitcase covered with Porsche patches. So we decided to pull over and stop a little ways down the road. The suitcase could not have fallen off in a more perfect spot a really wide shoulder just before an on ramp.
I start walking back towards the suitcase as I start to approach the suitcase there is a black car about 100 ft away parked on the on ramp shoulder.
The guy in the car starts yelling at me , so I walk over to the car. He is all excited and starts telling me don't approach the suitcase, it could be a bomb and the state police have been DISPATCHED.
So I chuckle and start explaining
" it's a suitcase that fell off the back of one the club members car, we're in the same antique car club and we all just left from A get together in ocean city". He's not buying it. So after a short conversation, I find out he has been sitting there for close to a half hour. I told him this is ridiculous, It's my buddies suitcase i'm picking it up. Then He starts threatening to have me arrested if I approach the suitcase, Because this is now a federal case.. now I can clearly see this guy is a little touched, so I smile and nod as I'm in no rush and now I'm curious to see how this whole thing's going to play out.
So i start googling the number for the state police just to be sure he actually called. By the time I find the number, the state police show up.
The guy goes running over to the cop car right up to the window (a good way to get shot ). He starts explaining how it's a suspicious case and he is the one who called them . I say to the police officer "excuse me that's my friend suitcase it fell off the back of his car." The cops says then go pick it up. I said thank you ...I picked up the suitcase and walked back to the truck and drove home.

I'm sure someone is looking for this well loved suitcase covered in past holiday patches dating back to the 81 pca parade. If you know the owner give then a call let them know it's safe and just has only has a little extra patina on two of the corners .I can box it up and get it in the mail.

BTW we had a great time. Really cool venue .....bathtubs on the boardwalk.
Looking forward to the next holiday

Regards Ned

Ned, I had judged Jeff Leeds car Saturday morning and he had a piece just like this on his rack. Patches & not stickers stuck in my mind as being out of the ordinary.

Funny story.

Here is a picture of the luggage in the pictures on the owners vehicle.
It was taken at the TYP356ne Club Day in August 2015.

Got a pic of the same car and suitcase from the 2017 Helen Southern Drive! Hope it can be returned to its owner.

I'll bet he is too embarrassed to respond . . .

Oh, that would be me.

Ned
Great story. It added to the suitcase patina. That’s hilarious.

Knowing the owner, he was probably driving so fast that he “blew” the case off the rack !! Wonderful happy ending !! Kudos to you, Ned, in picking it up !!

If he was using bungies, I can see how the suitcase came off! :-) Time to get the leather straps.

Tie a small rope to the handle and lead it up through the vent window and tie it to an extremity (your choice).
Adjust the slack to regulate the amount of shock you can stand. (Or, I guess, use Mike's suggestion of the straps.)

Glad you got it back, Jeff.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....
