Just looked at a T6 with unusual VIN tags

#1 Post by Larry Brooks » Fri Oct 19, 2018 12:49 am

I just looked at a T6 with a couple VIN tags I have never seen before.

One is riveted to the left A pillar and one in front of the gas tank.

They are perfectly stamped and rather professionally installed.

Of course the 7 digit number has no correlation to a regular 356 VIN. This leads me to believe it was an assigned number, but by whom and why?

Incidentally I did find the hidden number under the right hinge cover and it matches the number on the hood and elsewhere. It also matches the year and coach builder (Reutter) that I figured the car is.

Is there any evidence of the stamped factory one in front of the gas tank>

Yes, the original number is stamped there and also under the right hinge cover.

It is now titled as the new number? That is very strange, especially with the "made in W germany". That makes it seem like someone did a very legit-looking job of assigning a bogus number to it. I have seen similar things, but never with a country of origin on it.
