Who do I trust to work on my ‘64 coup in SoCal?

#1 Post by Allen Fari »

Hi everyone,
I am new in the 356 world and could use your help in finding a place to have my ‘64 coupe serviced.
Had a couple of bad experiences on the phone with two of the high profile shops. So, please help a fello enthusiast in finding a reliable shop.
Who do you trust with your baby ??
By the way I’m in the Anaheim CA area but willing to travel for that gifted expert.
Thanks!

Of course there is my old friend Jack Staggs in San Clemente, but with the recent passing of his partner Kerry Sink, he may not be in a position to take any new customers for awhile.

It may be some distance, but Larry Markham, in Somis, has been working on these for forty-ish years. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of these little cars.

Larry is one of the best. Definitely worth the trip if you are doing major engine work and want it done right.

Wassamatta U (guys)? No one offers a welcome?
Welcome, Allen.
I think Scott's is in Anaheim; (714) 634-2027 . Larry and Jack are a bit of a ride, but both are well beyond "competent". Edelweiss Porshaus is a bit closer in Torrance: (310) 320-3302. Ed at Klasse is also in Torrance: (310) 370-3014.
You're in 356 service PARADISE!

Gentlemen, I can’t thank you enough.
The level of response was most gracious.
...Thankful beyond words.
Cheers!

Willkommen, Allen. Ron's right, the guys here are so anxious to help, that sometimes the greetings get passed over in their enthusiasm. Yes, SoCal is 356 paradise! And we're coming up to a fun time of year with Christmas parties, then the Lit Meet and Phoenix Club. So get her tuned-up and join the fun. See you around!

Welcome to the group Allen. If you are mechanically inclined, and the shop let's you learn about these cars while they are taking care of it, you might find that doing your own service work is part of the fun pf owning one.

Watch out though. I once bought an Austin-Healey so that I could impress the girls. Afterward, I found out that I didn't have any time left to go out on dates.......
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Thanks again everyone.
I would love to learn more about the masterful engineering of these fine specimens.
Also, Jim Liberty; I would like a phone number to get in touch with you and your shop.
Best,
Allen

Hi Allen
You don't need the best shop to do a service. part of the 356 experience is that you and possibly a knowledgeable friend could do the periodic oil changes valve adjust spark plug replacement etc on your own.
