Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
Hi All
Looking online I have noticed that some of the relays available are put together with an inline fuse and some are not.
Is the fuse required as Im guessing the current running through the Bat. wire/cable will spike inturn constantly blowing the fuse.

Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
Peter, none of my cars have a fuse for the relay and so far I have not melted the wire. It would have to be a pretty hefty fuse as the current is as you say quite large. probably in the area of a 40 amp spike.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

WW use to sell them with a 30AMP fuse built into the relay. The newer ones don't have it. The relays have about a two to three year life span based on putting about 10k miles per year. Has one go out on my 912 on a drive from San Diego to Monuments Valley, spent some time under the car with a screw driver starting it until I sound a relay. Sorry spares now.

Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
we just repaired a 64 with a slow turn over condition. The owner had rigged an extra relay, and extra smaller motorcycle battery and a trickle charger and had a new starter installed. Really "horsed up". All we did was to clean the ground cables and the main starter cable wires on both ends along with replacing the transmission to body ground and clean the contact points very thoroughly. We then removed all of the extraneous "stuff" and put the factory wiring back like it should be and now the car turns over perfectly every time. I would highly encourage everyone who has a starter turn over problem to do these things first before adding extra unneeded parts to your car

Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
Mario, the attached picture shows the relay I used and the following are basic instructions for the connections. Hope it helps your Installation of SSR relay
Attach the ground wire from one side of the relay coil to one of the knurled nuts that holds the bracket for the tachometer in place.
Remove the black wire from terminal 50 on the ignition switch and make a connection from terminal 50 to the other side of the coil connection. This will now actuate the relay instead of the solenoid when you turn the switch. The current to operate the relay is around 200 mA so somewhat negligible so virtually no load on the ignition switch so it may now last the life of the car.
Now take the wire you removed from the ignition switch terminal 50 and connect it to the NO connection on the relay.
Now take the COM connection from the relay and connect to one of the 3 terminals marked #30 on the ignition switch.
You should now be able to actuate the starter through the relay.
Tuck the relay up out of the way in the harness and secure it with the tie wraps just so it does not drop down while driving.
Relay is Manufacturer #: W9AS5D52-5 https://www.alliedelec.com/product/schn ... /70184949/

Mario,
Found this picture, you can see how it is installed under the dash.

INGITION? That doesn't sound right to me, and has anyone tried to buy one. Last I heard Tony was extremely difficult to contact.

You do not need to buy from him, just see how he suggests to install it.

Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
Hugo, I was commenting on the spelling and also wondering about his responsiveness. I have used Tony for key work but a long time ago and from recent comments he has been difficult to contact. I have always put my relays behind the dash.

David,
Yes, that is what I heard, it is extremely difficult to contact him. Same here, the last time I saw him was at the LA Lit and Toy show several years ago.
I noticed the spelling error after I posted.

Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
Here's the instructions and parts for Tony's relay. I have Joe's installed but bought Tony's many years ago as an alternative. I think that Tony's makes more sense as it is out of the elements but I have been too lazy to install it since Joe's is still working.

Here's Joe's instructions from WAY back. Notice that the relay is mounted on the starter.

Re: Joe Leoni 6V Starter Relay Installation
Mark. You did mean starter motor not generator I am sure. Also as Joe pointed out the relay is there to save wear on ignition switch so really no point to placing it on the starter motor where it is harder to access.

Thanks David. I corrected my post. I was too eager to get it up there.
