Engine Compartment Sound Deadening

#1 Post by Robert Haubold »

I know about the sound deadening kits available. I'm just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for the raw material to cut my own pieces. I'm not worried about exact patterns or such. Just looking for something that will look presentable and can be painted. I painted my 911 engine compartment with Wurth Road Guard and am very happy with the results. I would like to find some material to cut my own pieces and paint with the same in my 59 A coupe.
Thanks for any help you may have,

Bob

I think 30 lb. roofing tar paper has been suggested in the past.

Just FYI. The kits are not exact fit either! If you have your old insulation, you can peel the fiber batting off the sheet and glue it to your new part. It will be no less work to make your own than to buy an overpriced kit and have to cut it and move the batting over. This is not a bad job at all if you currently have your old insulation mostly in place. I’m appalled at the price I paid for my “kit” that I had to trim to match the original.

Two layers of the roofing materials glued together supposedly give the right density and thickness.

Go to your local roofing supply and take a look of what he or she has available
