Re: Goodwood
Seemed like he had more than a little extra, but then again a lot of the drivers weren't close to a real line...

Re: Goodwood
I wish my pre A would handle like that, i am already sweating bullets when i see a bend in the freeway at 65mph. Maybe i just need a smaller steering wheel like this guy?

Re: Goodwood
There are ways to make a pre-A handle fairly well. My '55 race car was quite competitive. The later cars are better but most of the pre-A handling issues can be tuned out.

Tuned out as in ignoring them or fixing them?C J Murray wrote:There are ways to make a pre-A handle fairly well. My '55 race car was quite competitive. The later cars are better but most of the pre-A handling issues can be tuned out.

Re: Goodwood
Fixing them. There are relatively few differences from the pre-A to the A but they are very effective.
The torsion bars are softer front and rear on an A. There is a front anti-roll bar added to the A. The rear shocks are mounted differently but that should not matter too much. An important change was to increase the caster angle which is a bit more difficult but it can be done. Porsche did it by moving the front top torsion tube rearward relative to the lower tube and you wouldn't want to do that unless you were doing major body repairs up front. The solution is to make eccentric link pin bushings to place the lower link pin forward and the upper link pin rearward. The bushings should be pinned in place so they do not rotate. Increasing the camber will make a big improvement in straight line stability and front cornering grip. Like all 356s, it's good to have a small amount of camber in the rear.
Softer torsion bars are available from Sway-away that will work without modification.

Re: Goodwood
you think the guy in the picture is still running 5.00 x 16 bias ply tires on 3.25" wide rims with tubes in them? Those may slow me down a little too, in addition to the lack of negative camber and a torsion bar. Compared to this, my A feels 'planted'

Generally, fewer modifications are allowed by European vintage racing organizations. It may not be so modified as you think.

CJ is correct the FIA Rules that we race under in Europe are much more restrictiveCJ Quote - Generally, fewer modifications are allowed by European vintage racing organizations. It may not be so modified as you think.
It is a very well sorted 356 with a driver who has a good mix Racing experience
Take a look at Sam Tordorf in Wikipedia

Re: Goodwood
Cliff,
Please note that I have never walked around this car so I cannot be definitive.
In addition, I am out of date with the current Regs. (too busy sorting out everyday road cars) but here is what that car probably has:-
engine size - Regs. say 1600 plus 1st Oversize (Power will be around 150HP)
carbs - Twin Choke Solex
exhaust - Whatever they thought would work
brakes - 60 mm Drums (but Track width must remain Standard - so should have special offset Wheels)
wheels - 4.5" x 15"
tires - 5-00" x 15" Dunlop Racing
other... Any thing that was Homologated by Porsche with the FIA - `In Period`
Alluminium Lids/Doors and Plexi were Homologated but the Min. Weight is restricted (depending on the Model) but is around Full Road Weight, therefore it is a case of adding weight in the right places (Carrera`s are raced at a lower weight ?)
There must be 100mm clearance at the lowest point under the car
Vic`s Bar is used by most people and a Front Bar of anything up to 20mm

Re: Goodwood
Mike,
Thank you. The wheels and tires are a big restriction for sure. I thought that a pre-A had to have pre-A carbs over there so I was wrong on that. Even big drum brakes are a limiting factor.
Clearly the car is very well driven.
Cliff

Re: Goodwood
That race was a standout especially if you are interested in 356s!
The driver Sam Tordoff also races modern 'touring cars' , previously Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
The car originated from the US , previously owned by John Ruston , the green nose represents his race team colours.
The engine was tuned in UK by Andy Prill
