Concours VS Concourse

#1 Post by Eric Meyer »

Concours vs Concourse:

I've seen the word Concourse used incorrectly one too many times today… SO… for the sake of clarity…

A concours is an exhibition or contest, as in a 356 Porsche concours.

A concourse, on the other hand, is a large open area inside or in front of a public building.

end of rant :D

They are also pronounced very differently and often incorrectly. The "S" is silent in Concours d'Elegance.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Spell checkers and predictive typing between them could start wars if users aren’t careful.

Eric. It's even harder for us over this side of the pond, where we started the language off! (Off not Of)
And just like Americans have changed or evolved our language, so have our children that when they are talking amongst themselves we don't understand them! I just talk '356' and I lose them. It's great! Also have a problem with 'Spanglish., an amalgam of English and Spanish when we are out in Spain.

How about marque vs marquee; as in Porsche is the honored marque (mark) at Goodwood.

and the reception may be under a marquee (mär-ˈkē).
