Looking for spark plug recommendations

#1 Post by Simon Whittley »

I have a feeling this may "spark" as much debate as a "which oil to use" question, but what would folks recommend for a 6v 1959 356a 1600 for best performance? Not sure if it makes any difference but I use 123 Ignition electronic ignition.

Cheers
Simon

Past recommendations. I use the NGK plugs in preference on all my 356 engines.

NGK, cheap copper core version, especially for 6 volt.

Hi Simon
Yes, Always NGK B6HS. No Fouling / oiling, Ever. Never need changing! But I do. Also they are readily available from my local Motorcycle shop.
Cheers Jay

Same here, use them in all my aircooled engines, can get them in stock at the local FLAPS.

The long story is that back in '65 I was doing repossessions (now euphemistically called "recoveries") and was pulling an 18' Boston Whaler back from Ft. Lauderdale to Worcester, MA. in my '65 Volvo 122. Around Daytona the B18 engine started an irregular misfire. The plugs (oem Bosch) looked like they were too hot - but they were the factory heat range. I found some Champion's which got me as far as Brunswick, GA before they acted like the Bosch they replaced. I replaced again with Autolites which made it to somewhere in south, South Carolina. It was a late Sat. afternoon by then but there was a motorcycle shop open that I checked in with that had NGK's that cross referenced with the Bosch, so in they went. Drove the rest of the way to Worcester with only stops for food and fuel without a hiccup. It's been copper core NGK's ever since for everything that needs a spark plug for ignition.

Jim, NGK make spark plugs in Irvine so you may be correct as they may well be East of you.

Jim, by your reasoning I should not be using Bosch plugs being born in the UK in 43. Come to think of it I should not be driving a Porsche either but anything is better than BMC or anything with Lucas electrics. You make me feel guilty as the only US made car I have is a Subaru.

David, talk about making trouble for oneself, I have 2 - Morgans, one a 1953, a 1960 Sprite, and a 1970 Fiat 500 ABARTH. All are an adventure to drive, even a five mile commute to and from home. Porsche 356s are no fun, they always start, and don't brake down. ………………….Jim.

I have just finished an Elva Courier, English, that I am not driving until I have time to figure out why it is spitting oil out of the differential housing vent. I'm not sure what plugs I put in it. Probably NGK. It is actually a very nice solid car to drive, until you smell burning gear oil dripping on the exhaust. :D
