I am headed from Vienna to Salzburg and then to Munich this week. Any good 356 or Porsche sited to recommend? I don't think I will make it to Gmund.
Thanks.
Mark

Re: Traveling to Salzburg
Next weekend there is an all-Porsche treffen at Toscana Congress in Gmunden, located on the Traunsee in the beautiful Salzkammergut area. We live in Traunkirchen, about half way down the lake towards Ebensee, maybe 8k away. We plan to be there, although we are without 356 here at the moment, and the weather should be descent considering the time of year.
Salzburg, about a 45-minute Autobahn (the A-1, or better pronounced the Ahh-eins) drive west of here, has the prettiest location of any Austrian city, surrounded by towering Alps. It's Altstadt may be the most charming in all Europe. A good question is whether Salzburg is a small city, or a big town. Let us know how it strikes you.
Munich is definitely a big city, but a really cool one, being divided into many interestingly different sections. Swabisch and Austrian mountain cultures are much the same, quite distinct from up north. You won't have enough time! Enjoy!

Mark, if you like to drink beer, I highly recommend trying Stiegl Gold. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the suggestions. Had a great local wine with my steak for dinner. Saw two older 911s on the way to the hotel so some Porsche activity. Will keep searching!

Be on the lookout for a bunch of Pre As, they have their official meeting in Gmünd Oct 4-7! it may take them a while to get there

Re: Traveling to Salzburg
Mark, as you are travelling from Salzburg to Munich on the A8 autobahn you should turn off at Junction 115 to visit Hans Peter Porsche's Traumwerke museum in the village of Anger just inside the German border from Austria. Definitely worth a visit and if you are there in the morning you may meet Peter Porsche as well. If you visit Berchtesgarden and go up to the Adlerhof (Eagles Nest) you should drive the Rossfeldstrasse which is used anually at the end of September as a speed hillclimb, at which the Porsche museum will almost certainly have some of their cars present with notable drivers. Near to the Salzburg airport you can find the Red Bull Hanger 7 which has a free show of all the things Red Bull supports. Also Hanger 8 if you can allowed in.

Re: Traveling to Salzburg
Mark,
you must see Ernst Piech's Museum 'Fahrtraum' in Mattsee, just a few minutes north of Salzburg.
It is purely dedicated to Professor Ferdinand Porsche - Ernst's grandpa - and offers an excellent collection of cars built by the Professor from the very beginning up to WWII. Open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. See https://fahrtraum.at/en/

Re: Traveling to Salzburg
Thank you Robert and Robin. We've been spending summers in Austria for 15 years, and never knew about some of these places.
