smoke on acceleration and startup

#1 Post by Richard Holler »

So I am getting some smoke on acceleration and startup, lots of smoke if at idle for awhile and then accelerate from stop. replace rings? valve guides? does my 63 356B T6 have valve seals?

Potentially an intake valve stem seal has become misplaced. Pull your rocker covers and have a peek at them.

I'd ask if this is an engine with lots of miles since a rebuild or had any recent work done?

Do a leak down test first. Then chase down the results

Richard,
You've sort of posted 'my car makes funny noises; what should I do?' If you want valid suggestions, you should offer a whole lot more than 'my car makes funny noises'.
Mike's got a start; c'mon. How many miles, when did it start doing that, what did you do to it immediately before, etc?

1963 did not have valve stem seals.
Leak-down test will not tell you anything about valve guide issues.
Smoke on acceleration is usually rings.
Smoke on deccelleration is usually guides.
Ron, don't be such a grump; that's my job.

Car has ~64,000, its the 616/12 engine, Karmann. I became custodian about a couple years ago. The car was on that tv garage squad show (don't make fun :P, I tried to not let them touch it too much, lol)

I have no idea of engine mechanical history unfortunately. besides some body work and interior work, it sat in the back of a auto repair garage for many years.

Car runs smooth for the most part, some slight hesitations between 3000-4000 rpm at times (jets?), distributor and carbs were recently rebuilt , fuel pump/petcock rebuilt, tank cleaned, al zims front brake discs installed (yea, I kept the front drums ;)), bilstein shocks installed, valves adjusted around a year ago... How often should I adjust them?

engine probably needs complete tear down, but the car needs a new floor too so deciding to figure out what I should tackle first. yea its gots some rust, Chicago.... just trying to make it a nicer driver.flapper boxes seem to be disconnected... thanks for all the help guys...

One thing I observed it seems to smoke slightly more in warmer, more humid weather?

I agree with Chuck Allard above. My 912's intake valve stem seals are flying around on the valves stems, no longer anchored to the guides.

The accel pump injection washes the valve stems clean of oil on accelleration.

So fix the floor and drive it as is until you get to the next project. Just don't show up at a prius convention in it.

so the consensus I am getting is a little smoke on a tired engine is sorta normal for these boxers. I suppose the compression check would be a good thing to get done at some point for piece of mind?

Smoke on start up is normal because with a flat engine there is a tendency for oil to pool on the lower surface of the cylinders after shutdown and as the rings are now relaxed some oil will creep by and on start up get burnt. Hence the cloud of blue smoke. My Subarus often did it and my boxster has done it since new.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
