Filling A New Dry Charge 6 Volt Battery

#1 Post by Donald Zingg »

Anyone know how many ounces (or c.c’s) of electrolyte is required to properly fill a new dry 6 volt lead-acid battery Group size 1 or 19L before its initial charging?

No way to exactly define the actual measurement as the plates could be different thickness for different batteries. Just fill it until it is about a 1/4" above the top of the plates then recheck it once it is fully charged. Chances are you will not have to add any acid at all. Too much and it will overflow and then you have a significant corrosion issue.

I just use distilled water and fill as David said. Then charge.

Don't use distilled water if it is a dry charged battery. You MUST USE ACID of the correct SG.

If it is an empty dry charge battery do NOT use distilled water to fill it. You add electrolyte, and there is down in the fill holes an opening that you fill to. Be careful with any spilled electrolyte, mop up and neutralize with baking soda, and watch your clothing. Then you give it a light charge.
