356 engine numbers....need help
The way I understand it...you three numbers stamped on the case that should be the same. Then you have the serial number. Then you have the type. Then the last is the one on the case half that is the engine ????? I have a 40455.....where can I find out what this means. My serial number has been stamp 1600.....and I think that it totally bogus.
Thoughts?

The serial number is on the third piece and should have a star before and after it. The case matching numbers are three digit (Occasionally two digit), one on each case half in front of the fan shroud and one on the top of the third piece. The 40455, if on the left case half, is the engine assembly number. This number runs consecutively regardless of engine type.
If you can, post a picture of your bogus number.

If this number is towards the distributor from the fan shroud and under the generator, the last two digests will tell what type of engine it is for instance "15" is a 356C engine. Types of engines are in the specifications please booklet. Someone you know should have a copy, al zim Engine Type corrected per "Vic"

Vic might have a listing of those assembly numbers. Harry Pellow listed quite a few of them in somewhat numerical order in his books, but my copies of his books are at my winter digs. Maybe someone else can chime in. The number 40455, if it hasn't been altered, will probably get you within a few months of the engine's birth date.
That engine serial number has definitely been messed with. A metallurgist might be able to decipher part of the true number.

When we get home on the 20th, I'll try to look up the assembly number, 40455.

Assy no. 40455 would be early 1960 per Pellow's Secrets of the Inner Circle. Engine number if a 616/1 would be between 603089 (40321) and 603219 (40703), or if a 616/2 between 86743 (40123) and 86845 (40471).

I have case # 801795 with the date stamp of 30/60 which is series # 44225.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

… and I have a late '60, P604503, #44448, date stamped 41/60, the car was titled new, at first sale, as a '61, not uncommon back then,

We've got it surrounded!!
I tried to blow up the picture of the serial number. Someone has gone to great lengths to destroy the original serial number on the third piece. Smacks of a possible stolen engine at some point......
Not accusing Mike of anything shady though. He's just the recipient.
