Extended third piece studs - not a 912
See attached photo showing lower four corner studs on a ‘63 Normal case set for third piece. This is NOT a 912 situation. On disassembly, four carefully machined 10mm spacers were under the M8 x 1.25 12mm ATF nuts.
Anyone know why?

Ah ha!
I was hoping you’d know. Don’t get many of them round here.

These are the Euro muffler spacers Vic was referring to, I believe....

Re: Extended third piece studs - not a 912
I get it.
So lm left deciding whether to stay with the spacers thereby keeping this engines original config in tact. Or, replace the extended studs with the shorter versions, omitting the spacers but loosing this mill’s ‘personality’.
I’m inclined to keep it original, like we all endeavor to do, but Im wondering if the four extended fasteners would ever present interference issues with adjoining sheet metal or modified oil filtration
additions.

If is not going in it's original car and with original heating system, maybe shorter studs would be appropriate.

It depends upon the 3rd piece having a Euro heat serial # & showing it's match to the case 1/2s; USA or Euro heat system?

My thinking is that since the studs just screw in and the other 98 % of the European heater is gone, maybe they should reside in a plastic bag with a label. It is interesting to get such details identified, and we are very fortunate to have access to so much knowledge.

And the beautifully turned spacers.
Thanks Martin.
I agree. Stoddard has the shorter studs for $2.25 ea.

Re: Extended third piece studs - not a 912
Euro heater system has the benefit of putting out a lot of heat! The parts are available if you look - not cheap, but a nice original touch.
I wrote an article some months back in the Registry mag on the Euro heater system ...

My thanks to Vic, Martin, Dick and Greg for your enlightenment. In the future I’ll be more mindful of Tech Articles in the Reg Mag. The studs will remain as part of the ‘personality’ of this engine. One benefit - it came with a pair of older A styled narrow (sans carb heat) single flapper boxes that Im currently restoring.
