Is there a special tool for this?

I am trying to tighten the nut on the backside of the dash, that secures the ignition switch to the dash. Is there a special tool for this?

I have always considered that nut just for setting depth of the ignition going through dash and bezel on front of dash as what you tighten. This helps: https://www.stoddard.com/stoddard-dash-bezel-tool.html

Be careful that you do not lose the locating lock washer that goes between that nut and the dash. Here is a link to a picture of the washer in case it is missing. Without it the switch will rotate every time you use it.https://www.aasesales.com/products/h2l-e60-5p-104891

First, the points made above are correct. The nut spaces the ignition switch and the washer is necessary. Several of the vendors sell the special tool that tightens the bezel on the front, or you can Google "356 Porsche Bezel Tool".

You can also use a 3mm or 1/8" drift pin and remove them without harm, but it takes care to do so; hold the bezel with the pin, reach behind, rotate the switch as much as the index washer allows, counter-rotate the pin, rotate the switch, iterate.

and...the index washer goes behind the dash, not directly behind the bezel. I've seen this on many cars and it looks awful The 'ears' of the washer fit into the two cutouts of the opening and prevents the switch from rotating when the key is turned.

Snap ring pliers with right-angle tips work well to remove/tighten the bezel.

I assumed that since the bezel rested near the paint, the thing must tighten from behind.

I think you could set the bezel to the switch and possibly tighten the ignition switch from behind but it's tight back there. You could fit a thin nylon washer between the bezel and dash so you don't scratch the dash. I do that on the chrome radio nuts.
