I am recarpeting my '57 A Coupe, and when I removed the one-piece cushion for the rear seats, I found a piece of wood glued to the "hump," and it had a number on it that appears to be "541." The chassis number is 100461, and the color number is 704. It is badged as a Reutter vehicle.
Any ideas as to what it means?
Thanks!

But on the inside of the car, under the seat, that was glued to the frame? OTH, it does look like a familiar number, but when I google transmission or transaxle and "541," nothing comes up.

Remember that German number 1's have a tail that makes them look like a 7 or in this case a 4. I think it is a partial number as there appears to be more of the blue marking after the longer line (which you are calling the 1) that looks like a dash. I feel it is just a random scrap glued down to originally act as a spacer with no numerical reference of importance.

That's as good an explanation as any, Jim.
