A/B Fuel Pump Install Torque

#1 Post by Paul Ahnell »

When installing Subject pump on my '60 Normal, what is the correct torque value for the nuts securing the light alloy Intermediate Flange to the case, and the bolts securing the pump flange to the Intermediate Flange?

I want to confirm that it is 15 Ft-Lbs as noted in the attached extract from the Registry Troubleshooting & Repair article.

Thanks.

Shop manual and spec book list no torque values.

Yup. Tthat's why I'm wondering where the info in that table comes from. Although page E105 of my shop manual does give 14.5 Ft-Lbs for the Timing Case Cover nuts.

Good question, Paul. 15 lbs sounds safe.

Got my answer.

Flipping through Harry Pellow's "Secrets of the Inner Circle" I find he calls out 15 Ft-Lbs for the four fasteners. If it was good enough for The Maestro, it's good enough for me. He also recommended a light coat of Ford water pump sealer (Ford? Why Ford? Of course, my copy is older than dirt.) on the Intermediate Flange face that mates up to the case.

I wonder where Harry got his info. Most likely through his experiences. We know he was constantly looking to improve upon the Porsche engine. Ford sealant? He must have thought it needed a sealant and that Ford had the best. I'll check out my copy of Secrets to see if I can find any more info.

Mike: Secrets Version 1.1, page 190-191. And, all the way in the back, page 6 of the Engine Assembly Checklist.

When it comes to tightening the fuel line to the fuel pump, I just put it hand tight at first. Then I start the engine and see if it leaks there, usually it does slightly. I then and only then tighten it up little by little with a wrench until it stops leaking. This way I don’t end up stripping the threads. Ask me how I know.

Yep, 15 lbs. I also checked his ABC's and Elfrinks, Chilton's and Clymer's. Lots of info on fuel pump pressurebut nothing on the torque requirement.

"Back in the day"... in 1989 we were running the Ford Probes in the IMSA Firehawk series for MotorCraft, and were running through master cylinders at the speed of light. The fluid would boil and the seals would melt. The best brake fluid that we could find, and we tried all of them, was the Ford Heavy Duty Brake Fluid. The sealant was equally impressive. No doubt in the intervening 30 or so years technology has produced improvements, but at the time it was the best shot at finishing a race. So Harry may have been onto something, but there's some pretty impressive bits out there now as well.

Perusing The Maestro's Little Spec Book, page 60, "Torques of the Various Fasteners", he states:
11. MOST ALL 8MM NUTS/BOLTS, (12, 13 or 14 MM ATF) 2- 2.5 15 - 18 FT-LBS.
NOTE: ON 12MM ATF NUTS, USE 15 FT-LBS AND BLUE LOCKTITE!

Still not sure where he got the info .

More like guinea pigs. We also found out that the cast rear uprights would break at particularly inopportune times.....taking the wheel with it.....
