She comes alive !

#1 Post by John Clarke »

Hi all
It is just music to my ears. As you are probably aware, after hitting that animal in France in 2019 returning from the Le Mans 24 Hrs race with a wrecked car. our car went for long term repairs and now after just over 2 years and all that Covid nonsense it was time to fire her up :D
After a few battery recharges it moaned and groaned, Oil Idiot light out and at almost the point of another check and charge She spat into life :)
It spat and spat. It's old gas with stabiliser but it finally evened out. I could have listened to it running for hours , it has been so long. But we were in an enclosed garage so I would have ended up dead ! So good to hear that 356 Bursch note again. I have missed it. It's been a long time !
Keep the Faith :) :P :D 8)
Very pleased Jay

What battery did you end up buying Jay?
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Hi David
Still researching the new battery. There is a problem over here regarding the shipping of Sulphuric Acid. The law apparently changed about 2 years ago, after the acid was being misused! They now won't ship the acid to a private individual to fill their dry batteries prior to charging.
I managed to finally start the engine using a wrong size battery (dimensionally ) that the body shop installed as our original battery gave up.
As guys here often say , the 6 volt system if in good shape should start any engine in good tune. It finally fired up after a couple of charges , but it is a square shape battery and looks a bit out of place ! So still looking for one locally so I can collect. Thanks for all your help ref the battery information.
It was real good hearing the 356 running again. Will try to take it out for the first run this Holiday weekend.
Best wishes Jay

I suggest that you back your car out of the garage. Turn the fuel off. remove the fuel line to the pump then turn the petcock to reserve. That should drain everything and you can start with fresh gas. Use Motor Vehicle gas NOT AvGas. With AvGas you probably will have to rebuild your carburetors. I would also suggest you check the resistance in the plug wires, install new plugs and do a distributor service. It never hurts to have fresh oil in the car. Lube the front end and flush the brakes.

Hi Al
Car is very low on gas, so a refill should purge that. Carbs are the Dellorto DRLA 40's and run smooth now, like they always have. Brakes have DOT 5 Silicone ,so don't see a problem there. Front Links and Pins regularly greased. Dizzy rebuilt . New NGK BR5 2RS plugs. Don't think the copper cored plug wires are breaking down, and clean oil , so I hope I'm good to go. Good advice though.
Cheers Jay
