Speedster boot cover.

#1 Post by Robert Thiemrodt »

My 58 Speedster currently has a canvas boot cover. It is in the picture with the brown leather tie down. Also in the picture is the now correct vinyl boot cover I just received. The tie down on it is white. Is white correct? I've been to many car shows, and seem to remember the concours correct cars having the brown leather tie down. I've taken hundreds of pic's of these cars over the years, but none of them show what I need. The place where I purchased it is looking into it. I was just curious what the board here thinks/knows. Thanks all!!!

Robert

Original black tonneau covers on early Speedsters typically had black leather straps. I have never seen an original black tonneau cover from a '58 Speedster but I'm pretty confident black or tan straps would be the norm. Red tonneau covers and beige tonneau covers originally had tan leather straps. All original tonneau cover straps were assembled with a roller buckle and a separate keeper loop, as shown below.
You might be able to change the color of those white straps with black leather dye.

Thanks Donald,
While my car is not concours level, I would like the leather to be correct. The car is ruby red, and a black boot with white buckle doesn’t look correct.

OK, so on your Speedster, what does this "tie down" with its buckle, tie down to?
My '57 car doesn't have it.
Thanks.

Dan,

From behind the skirt the straps are threaded through the collapsed frame linkage then around and out to the front of the skirt into the buckles.
