Carb Heater

#1 Post by Eric McKinley »

I am hoping I can get some advise on the carb heating system. Please excuse me if this is not the correct term.

I am missing all the parts on my C car, I understand that some members blank them off at the tinware and flapper boxes but I think I would like to reinstate them.

I can source various parts, carb heater flap part 27, the 2 connection pieces part 29 and the 2 ventilation tubes 28 however having looked at the schematics there appears to be a few other pieces that I may need.

Could someone please fill in the blanks for me with regards to my needs, assume I have nothing.

I spoke to Doug a few days back and he explained what it does but I'm still in the dark in relation to how it works, what does it connect to, to function, is it on a cable, how do you operate the flap, sorry for the questions.

The push rod, 20 which connects to rod 27, connects at the other end to a bellows which opens the flaps under the proper conditions.
Hope that helps.

Check on The Samba or with our trusted vendors like Klasse 356, Stoddard, etc. Some parts have been reproduced.

Erik
Here is a pic of what you still need.
There may be more than one type of bellows, I dont know if this one is correct for a C.

And don't be lured by the cheap price of a VW bellows. They look the same and fit the same, but are a totally different heat range. They mount in the hot air exiting the engine shroud while ours mount in the cooler ambient air on the front side of the fan housing.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Thank you very much for the replies.

I am starting to get my head around this, when the bellows reaches a certain temperature it opens the flaps to let the hot air through which is directed towards the carbs.
Is this correct?
Can I ask where the bellows rest to get this heat.

Bellows is behind the fan housing between fan housing and firewall. It expands to close off the flappers as it heats up.

Eric, page E27 of the factory manual has a good description of the carb heater function. You do have a factory manual don't you?
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
